With the introduction of USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 and the new MacBook Pro models in late 2016 came the promise of plugging in a single connection to power your entire desktop. Power, displays and every peripheral all flowing through one plug, simplifying everything to a single standard has been a dream since the earliest days of the PC and now its here – kinda. Is there a splitter for the Thunderbolt on my MacBook Air? Please check About This Mac on the device and tell us if it's a MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) or some other model with the year and details intact. Example: Belkin Thunderbolt 2 Express Dock HD Thunderbolt Expansion Chassis, with Gigabit Ethernet, 3 x USB 3.0, 2 x. ![]() What many early adopters found out, and what new users continue to discover, is that getting the connection of the future to work with the equipment of the present is. It’s a world full of adapters, cables, docks and dongles to do what you need, and ultimately, most fall short of that single cable promise. Of all the confusion surrounding USB-C/Thunderbolt 3, the issues causing the most consternation is the connection of external displays. With half a dozen existing common display connection standards and the wave of next generation USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 displays getting thrown into the mix makes it difficult to sift through all of the conflicting information. We created this guide specifically for users of USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 MacBooks to take the guesswork and confusion out of running external displays with their new computers. Some notes before we get started - • USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 plugs and receptacles look identical, but they are not fully interchangeable. In general, a Thunderbolt 3 connection can downgrade to USB-C, but USB-C cannot become Thunderbolt 3. • For the purposes of this guide we’re going to refer to the USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports found on the MacBook Pro models as USB-C ports unless we are talking specifically about Thunderbolt 3 capabilities. • “Docking station” can refer to several different types of devices. Henge Docks refers to a stand-alone docking station that connects to a computer via cable as a “tethered docking station” to differentiate it from our MacBook form-fitting Horizontal and Vertical Docking Stations (more on those solutions can be found under the section). Traditional Displays (HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, VGA) Traditional Displays use standard such as HDMI, DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, DVI or VGA for input. Many traditional displays support multiple connection standards, but all will require some kind of adapter or new cable to be used directly with the new USB-C Macs. Most buyers of the new USB-C MacBooks are upgrading from older MacBook models that used Mini DisplayPort cables or adapters to connect their external displays. The good news is that Henge Docks USB-C Tethered Docking Station,, comes equipped with a Mini DisplayPort connection for this exact reason. If you’re one of the MacBook users upgrading, all you have to do is plug your existing cable or adapter directly into Stone. For more information on connecting single and multiple HDMI, DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, DVI or VGA displays to your USB-C MacBook continue reading at. USB-C Displays As the USB-C connection continues to proliferate, more display options are cropping up that support this standard. The promise of a display that can handle all of your peripheral connections and power your MacBook through a single cable is enticing, but there are some tradeoffs that need to be considered. (In this case, we are specifically talking about the USB-C standard not Thunderbolt 3 displays, which are covered under ) While no adapters or special cables are required to connect these displays to a USB-C equipped MacBook, the single cable solution may fall short for many users. Many USB-C equipped displays currently on the market offer 4K resolutions and refresh rates of 60Hz, but when running at their maximum resolution and refresh rates the USB expansion ports on these displays will degrade to USB 2.0 speeds. This is a limitation of the current USB-C standards. Power delivery is another compromise. Several monitor models currently for sale offer no downstream power and many that do only offer 60W to the computer. This can present a problem for some users that require a full 85W to charge their MacBooks. In either of these scenarios users may find it necessary to add an additional connection for a dock, hub and/or power adapter. Running dual USB-C monitors off a single connections is problematic. USB-C monitors cannot be daisy chained (plugged into each other) on the Mac platform and therefore have to be plugged directly into the MacBook independently. It is theoretically possible for a Thunderbolt 3 tethered docking station to run dual USB-C displays off of a single plug, but we are not aware of any docks currently on the market with the ports necessary to make this arrangement possible. 5K Displays that connect over Thunderbolt 3 While offering a staggering number of pixels and incredible image quality, the latest 5K Displays are a special breed and require some consideration about their compromises before taking the plunge. Running a 5K display requires refreshing 14.7 million pixels 60 times per second.

PDF Download prevents this problem ever arising by allowing you to control exactly how and when PDF files are opened or downloaded. You're partially right. ICloud doesn't play with Android at all, and Windows minimally. But cost-wise, Apple is the better deal. 2TB of iCloud = $9.99/month. For that price, Google gives you 1TB, which is.well, half. At lower levels, $2.99/month gets you 200GB on iCloud vs 100GB for $1.99/month on Google (or $3.98 for 200GB if you're math challenged). So no, iCloud is not in any way the more expensive option. ![]() Well, can you restore old versions? Because backup means: going back in time, and retrieve previous versions. The big problem with just a copy somewhere happens when you bump into a software bug. For example, you're editing a Word document and everything seems fine and dandy. Two weeks later it doesn't open for some reason. No idea, Word crashes when it tries to open it. Then you want to try and open previous versions of that same file. Google Drive will keep the last 30 days of revisions. Through the web interface, you can select versions to keep permanently. Not sure how this new backup app works with that, but I'd certainly hope it was compatible. ![]() Epson XP-446 Driver & Software Download for Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and Mac OS. We've answered your questions about and; now here are answers for Word 2011. Interface I think the Ribbon is ugly. Can I disable it and return to normal toolbars? First of all, it's not an either/or thing: The Ribbon doesn't replace 'normal toobars.' Those toobars are all still there. Secondly, it's easy to make the Ribbon go away: You can hide it temporarily by clicking on an arrow in the upper right of Word's window. Or, if you want to get rid of it altogether, you can go to the Ribbon pane in Word's preferences and uncheck Turn On The Ribbon. If you really wanted to, you could make Word 2011 look just like Word 2008 by disabling the Ribbon and then selecting View -> Toolbars and enabling the floating toolbars. All that said, don't assume that you'll want to get rid of the Ribbon before you try it. It's true that some who've used Word 2010 for Windows hated its version of the Ribbon. But the Ribbon has evolved; many (including some Macworld editors) have grown to like it. Don't be too quick to turn back the clock. One thing I really hate about Word 2008 (and Excel) is that when you open the application, a new document automatically appears. I then have to delete the new document before I can open the existing document I want to edit. Does Word 2011 fix this? By default, Word 2011 opens the Document Gallery when it launches. When you pay for a VPN with a debit card of PayPal, you have to give up some information to ensure that there isn’t any fraud going on. One time on Reddit, I saw a user complaining that they had to give their billing address when paying with a debit card. But in reality, these companies HAVE to do this. These anti-fraud measures aren’t there for fun, or to store your information, but instead to verify that the card and information are being used by the owner and not someone else. This debit card information is usually stored by the payment processing company, but the information can be linked back to your account. The same applies to Paypal as well, which could technically provide a link that could be traced back to you. However, if you’re using, then there is NO link between your VPN activity and your personal account information anyway. So the bottom line is that you are most likely OK to use a debit card or PayPal when using your VPN, but not all VPNs are created equal. Thanks for the great resource. That's generally true for any AV (A-M) software as it will generally damage your mailbox index or worse. There are no known viruses that infect OS X. Do not install any third party anti-virus software on Macs, it will only cause problems. Due to the methods in which they function it can be especially difficult to un-install such programs. Currently I am using a Windows OS laptop. I have been using Antivirus for several years. Of course you have. If you run Windows on a Mac with Boot Camp or Parallels, the need to conduct routine anti-virus chores to maintain your Windows Experience is a requirement. The Mac is a different world. Learn about it:. Forget Windows. OS X security. Actual 'viruses' for the Mac are for all intents and purposes, non-existent. That is not to say that there is no 'malware'. Every so often, there is a Trojan or two that one must be watchful for. Any competent security software, such as ClamXav is somewhat adept at keeping older Trojans at bay, and newer ones as they update the malware definitions. But Trojans, by and large, are equally defended against by user vigilance. ![]() By definition, 'Trojans' are malware inserted into, or masquerading as legitimate software wherein the user allows installation. Fortunately, OS X places a step before installation or execution of any new software, which requires the admin to verify by administrative password. This is to hopefully prevent the unintended installation of any code, be it malicious or otherwise. 'Hopefully', because it depends on the user to decide what is trusted versus untrusted software. ![]() It comes down to this. If the user is 'savvy' enough to avoid installing any software that might be infected (which is quite rare, by the way), then anti-malware software is a simple redundancy at the expense of the 'baggage' that the security software brings along with it. Obviously, it takes up space. It consumes memory, when activated. It consumes CPU resources. But the real issue is all the 'little' annoyances, such as compatibility with legitimate software, and even the OS itself. The reported instances of these are much greater than the number of 'success stories' evident. Especially for the experienced user, who sees little need for occasional hand-holding that an AV software affords. In fact, I would put it that it affords just as much a false sense of security, as it does real security. If you rely on security software, you may become complacent, and install software you might otherwise not do, and even the AV isn't going to be overwhelmingly effective against new Trojans for which definitions are not yet integrated into the protection scheme. Opinions on this matter vary widely. |
